Overview

Escape the daily grind and get a deeper understanding of yourself and your worth. This journey will not only teach you the value of getting off the digital grid, but will give you something better in return: The tools to focus, concentrate, and to deal with your innermost thoughts. Learn the true meaning of being in the moment. Escape your phone, look up, and discover a whole new world of wonder. There's no better place to immerse yourself in the present than Nepal with the beautiful Himalayas as a backdrop. This journey will give you back the ability to be present in the moment happening right now. Not yesterday, tomorrow, or on Instagram. This presence with your fellow travelers can give a completely different connection – one that's real and not just digital. You'll be forced to live with the awkward silence with no phone to escape into, and it will transform your social interaction moving forward – if you let it! You'll be visiting Nepal during an incredibly special period, Holi Festival! Get ready to dive in and get colorful!

Highlights

MEDITATION, YOGA, AND DIGITAL DETOX

MEDITATION, YOGA, AND DIGITAL DETOX

Learn some of the ancient Buddhist tools of meditative focus and apply them to your everyday life once you return. This will be a journey where you leave behind technology for a couple of weeks to be present in the moment. Some of it will be slow and monotonous, but what you’ll gain in return is patience, concentration, and presence. All skills that are scarce in today’s day and age.

HIKING THE NEPALESE HIMALAYAS

HIKING THE NEPALESE HIMALAYAS

The Himalayas will serve as a gorgeous backdrop while you’re exploring Nepal with your new travel friends. Tall mountains that will take your breath away! Both by looking at them, but especially once you venture into them and start your hike. We’re not going to lie: It will get tough along the way, but it’s also an opportunity to put some of what you’ll learn into good use.

SELF-INSIGHTS & UNDERSTANDING

SELF-INSIGHTS & UNDERSTANDING

Take a journey not only to the gorgeous Himalayan mountains but also a journey inward where time to explore yourself will give you greater insights and understanding of who you are and maybe even where you need to go next. This is your chance to rediscover your own values and worth without being influenced by those at home, but still in the comfort of the company of other, like-minded travelers.

Today is a free day for your crew, but it’s also Nepal’s Holi Celebration. Holi is the festival of colors so get ready for some fun! You’ll spend the day enjoying the many events happening throughout the city. Expect to get a bit messy, as you’ll be exchanging smears of various colors with friends and strangers alike. And don’t forget to wish each individual you come in contact with a “Happy Holi!”

DAY 4 – INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION & YOGA

It’s time for some self-exploration. Today, we look inward for an interactive introduction to the tools that lie in meditation and yoga. Within you lies endless possibilities waiting to be discovered. The workshop is meant to give you a greater insight into who you are to be able to tap into your potential for a greater version of yourself. You’ll be introduced to yogic breathing exercises to help you release stress and anxiety and to bring back clear and positive thoughts. You will also learn some easy yoga poses that you can incorporate into your daily routine for better health, focus, and relaxation.

DAY 5 – DRIVE TO DHUNCHE

Get comfy! This day will mainly be spent driving up the hills of Kathmandu to Dhunche. The drive should take around seven hours, so make sure you’ve downloaded a nice podcast or prepared a game you can play with your co-travelers while driving. You can also just enjoy a quiet moment while you pass by Himalayan mountains, terraced fields, and rustic villages. You’ll end your day at 1960 meters high and stay in a teahouse for the night.

DAY 6 – FIRST DAY OF TREKKING

Today your trek begins in Bharkhu where you’ll start the climb towards Thulo Syabru. Along the way, you’ll pass by apple farms, pine forests, and a few settlements. Today is mostly an uphill trail, but it’s not too steep. The trek ends at 2250 m. in Thulo Syabru, where you’ll stay in another teahouse.

DAY 7 – TREKKING ALONG LANGTANG RIVER

With approximately six hours of hiking in front of you, it’s a good idea to practice some of the yoga exercises from a couple of days ago before starting the trek. Today you’ll pass a suspension bridge crossing the Langtang River, the small village of Pairo Besi, the dense Nepalese forest. We'll take a small break in the village of Bamboo while we prepare for the final countdown of the day. The last bit of today’s trek is also the most difficult one with lots of stairs toward your destination for the night.

DAY 8 – TREK TO LANGTANG VALLEY

Prepare for another day of trekking awaits towards Langtang Village – perhaps the most difficult one. As we pass places such as Ghore Tabela, you can experience the breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung. We’ll go by water mills, Buddhist prayer wheels and chortens with sacred mounds of carved rocks, and by temporary settlements. These are used by herders who bring their cattle here to graze during the summer months. The route today is mostly ascending, but it’s a gentle climb until you reach Langtang Valley.

DAY 9 – HALF DAY HIKE & TIME TO RELAX

Another day of hiking – but today is a short one to also give you time to recover after four hours of going uphill. Today you get the chance to experience tiny villages, stone-built houses, streams, and moraines. We end the trek in Kyanjin where you’ll have time to explore the surroundings, give your legs a needed rest, or simply take in the snow-covered peaks that surround you in all directions. There’s also a monastery and a cheese factory if you prefer to explore even more.

DAY 10 – OPTIONAL HIKE OR RESTING DAY

Do you need time to get your journal updated and your legs a chance to rest? Good news! Today you can put your legs up, lean back, and enjoy the spectacular views surrounding you. You can also stroll around the village and maybe make a new friend?

If you’re up for it, you can also opt-in for an optional hike to Tserko Ri. It is definitely worth it if your legs are up for it, but it is also a hard, full-day trek. However, the views of this hike will help you look beyond exhaustion.

DAY 11 – THE DESCENT BEGINS

Prepare your knees or find a decent hiking stick: Today we start the descent! It might be easier on your breathing, but harder on some muscles, you didn’t even know you had. Today you retrace the route from Kyanjin through Langtang Village to Lama Hotel while catching the incredible mountain views you might have missed on the way up. End the day with some much-needed yoga stretches.

DAY 12 – LAST DAY OF TREKKING

As you continue walking downhill, take the opportunity to connect with your co-travelers on a deeper level. It can be difficult going up because there’s a stronger focus on breathing and inner thoughts, but now you have the chance to get some 1-1 time with the people walking at your pace. Try digging a layer deeper and share a secret or open up about why you needed to recharge in Nepal.

DAY 13 – BACK TO KATHMANDU

Get up early and enjoy the morning in the mountains before we start the drive back to Kathmandu. Find a creative way to keep your co-travelers entertained for part of the journey, get comfy and prepare for a long nap or enjoy the scenic foothills passing by outside your window. Tonight, you’ll sleep in a hotel after a long, well-deserved shower.

DAY 14 – TIME TO RELAX

After a week of hiking, you need a little pampering. Give your body a rewarding massage and try to practice some of the breathing exercises you were given on day 3 if the pain reaches your comfort zone. Remember, you can always tell the masseuse if it’s too strong. You can also try meditating to give your body and mind the ultimate experience of relaxation.

DAY 15 – FIRST DAY IN BUDDHIST MONASTERY

Switch off your phone and get ready for a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you! The next couple of days you’ll be staying in a Buddhist monastery in the sacred land of Padmasambhava. Here, you can get closer to harmony, peace, and contentment if you surrender to the process. This includes leaving your phone switched off and giving in to the experience of yoga and mediation. If you succeed, you can transform unwanted patterns into blissful living.

We will seek knowledge of the eternal journey of life and life beyond. These days can seem intense, but try to surrender to what you’re being taught. This way you can bring the skills of meditation, breath-work, and yoga with you back to your life at home and integrate them for a better and happier lifestyle.

After breakfast, we are ready to take a short hike to the cave where Ghuru Rinpoche meditated and discovered enlightenment. After you enjoy the last lunch at the monastery, it’s time to say goodbye and head back to Kathmandu for the final evening together. We celebrate the time we’ve spent together with a goodbye dinner.

Where you'll be staying

AUTHENTIC MOUNTAIN TEAHOUSES

While you're in Kathmandu and when you're living in the Buddhist monastery, you'll be staying in shared twin rooms.

On the trekking days, you'll be staying in teahouses, also known as 'Bhatti' in Nepalese. These are typically family-owned and can provide you with traditional home-cooked meals and stories of the mountains. You will typically share the room with 1-3 of your co-travelers. Don't expect luxury as most of them are basic but do expect to wake up to the most stunning views every morning.

FAQs

All personal equipment including:

  • Hiking shoes and trousers
  • Breathable, quick-drying, sports clothes
  • Sandals
  • A swimsuit and towel
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunblock)
  • Warm layers for the evenings
  • A small backpack to carry personal items throughout the day (water, snacks, shirts to use during activities).

  • A positive attitude.

The journey begins and ends in Kathmandu.

You can either get picked up at the airport or meet everyone at the first hotel on the day the journey begins if you choose to arrive earlier. From there, adventure in nature awaits!

The journey begins and ends in Kathmandu.

You can either extend your stay and explore more of Nepal at the end of the journey, or get a lift to the airport once we've said goodbye.

None at all. We do recommend that you're in decent physical shape, however, as you'll be trekking every day for almost a week while in the altitude of the Himalayas.

For the trekking part of this journey, we will be trekking for about 4-8 hours per day depending on the day, the conditions on the day in question and the physical strength of the group.

On re:discover journeys, we like to keep groups small. This helps you better assimilate into the local communities you'll be visiting, and gives space for you to truly connect and get to know your fellow travel mates. Group size will vary but expect around 6 to 12 people plus your local guides and teachers.

Overall, you'll be staying in basic, but comfortable accommodation.

While in Kathmandu, you'll share a twin room in a central hotel. While on the trek, you'll be staying in authentic, often family-owned teahouses.
In the Monastery, you will be sharing a room betwen 2-4 people.

You will be sharing with one or more of your co-travelers. Maybe your next BFF or TBFL (travel buddy for life)? Because we try to gather people with similar interests who are in the same place in life, we're convinced that you will find people to bond with on your trip, and one of the best ways is to share a room with them.

We recommend that you do! Either arrive early, stay longer or do both. It's impossible to do and see everything in 18 days – there's always more to do and to see. We've set the length of this journey so that you won't have to take off too much time from work, but if this is not a concern of yours, well, then it's almost an obligation to stay a bit longer to see what else Nepal has to offer!

Did we not answer all of your questions? Not to worry – you can always ask! There are no stupid questions. Well, not a lot anyway. We're always happy to help – even if some questions might be silly to us, if we haven't answered them clearly by now, it's on us.

Plus, we love it when you get in touch!
